Youth forum: for those in Tasmania on 24th July:

'Youth: Voices of tomorrow: Dancing into the Future - What tune are
YOU dancing to?'

Date: 24 July 2003; 6 p.m.

Venue: University of Tasmania's Stanley Burbury Theatre, Sandy Bay Campus

All welcome for this youth forum for people 15 - 25 to have their
say, air their views and opinions (to be broadcast across Tasmania
the following week on ABC Radio 936 Tuesday 7:10 )

At the same, the ABC's 2003 Heywire competition will be launched (a
writing/journalism competition -- more at
http://www.abc.net.au/heywire/about.htm )

The forum is part of the The John Lees Forums -- a series of free
public forums to mark Tasmania's Bicentenary (more at end of message)
and includes singing, music and dance, refreshments; free; all

" Tasmania's bicentenary of white settlement is in 2004. As a
forerunner to this event, the John Less Forums of 2003 provide
opportunities for Tasmanians to confront some of the issues and
concerns that are part of our lives and to contemplate the future.

" Dancing into the future
Tomorrow's adults are today's youth, and they are Tasmania's most
precious resource. In this forum we will seek to give voice to our
youth, to understand what's important to them, what they feel about
problems, and why?

" What are the implications of the State's changing population? Are
they positive or do they build on existing problems such as the
difficulties associated with isolated rural communities, the high
youth suicide rate, drug abuse and youth homelessness? In the future
where will the opportunities lie for the State's youth?

" The talent in our youth community is great indeed, but is there a
despondency, borne of a lack of opportunity? For many, finishing
education means leaving the State, impelled by the need to follow
paths unavailable in Tasmania.
What can be done do to help?

" In this discussion we will draw on the direct experience of
Tasmania's youth to tease out core problems. We need to utilise their
enthusiasm and ideas in the State's development, and to coordinate
our efforts to impart a sense of direction. "
