I think it's time for me to learn how to play some music. I've been scarred for life since my primary school teacher said my fingers were too small (to cover the holes on the recorder!) and that I wasn't any good at it. I remember I used to practice at home quite a lot but when she said this I gave up. I know it should have made me practice more and improve but it didn't. I was probably grade 4 or 5 at the time as I think we only had music classes in the earlier primary school grades. later, when I was taking ballet lessons, I wanted to take piano classes but we could only afford one of these and dance it was. so since then I've appreciated music but not known how to play it. my friend @ozmawbs said maybe I should start with guitar as it might be easier to learn then move onto piano later. this sounds like a good idea - plus the benefit is that it's easier for me to buy a guitar than a piano! although I do have a keyboard that's been leant out but it's not a full set of keys like a real piano. so today I bought a classical guitar kit from Billy Hyde's Music store which is just down the road. I'm sure it's just the very basic kit but you need to start somewhere. they said it'd be fine for learning. it came with a case, a stand, some picks and a tuner and a cd, and the guitar of course. all up I spent about $120. they were having a special this weekend, though I'm not sure if this was on special. they have classes too - there's some on saturdays, $30 for 30 min session. I'll email to find out if there's any free spots for saturdays. in the meantime I remember seeing a few "learn guitar" videos on youtube, so I'll start here. and track the videos I've watched below for reference. basically I know nothing so I'm not sure where to start.. my calendar is free again and there's a long weekend coming up next weekend. I think it'll be nice to learn this, or start getting familiar with the terms etc over the break. I have some books I've bought over the years - some are still in boxes but I found a couple on the shelves.
my aim is to be able to play Autumn Leaves (love the Irrisistible Force's mix of it - that might be a bit too advanced and perhaps is more for piano?) I bought the sheet music for it once in UK, though it's available online also (pdf attached)
