Japan based sound artist and curator Christophe Charles is here in Brisbane to talk on a range of ideas and approaches he has developed over the past three decades. Creating works that cut across a variety of media and methods - from epic surround sound (*heard on thursday night at Mono.2) to more detailed installation pieces using various audio and visual stimulus - he will explore some of guiding themes of his work and also the broader issues surround sound art today.

Ever wondered what your house would look like if you could see its sounds? No, probably not. Neither have I. But I did walk around the house the other day tapping stuff. In the MP3 file below, you will hear music made from walls, doors, windows, picture frames, tourist trays, the bass futon.

Why you might ask? Because I was wondering if you could make music just by tapping stuff. It turns out you can. Actually, the rythms are surprisingly driving. This house rocks, all it needed was an opportunity to express its inner rythm.

Watch the video
this is some video I took with my old camera as I drove into Brisbane from Sydney for the final visit prior to leaving for the UK. you can't see much detail - but the lights are colourful and I can tell each step along the way - probably have a story for most of the spots driven past. I can't remember how many times I've driven through the city and valley over the years when I lived there. the valley looked alot different - new business, brighter lights. it brings back lots of nice memories of the fun times in brisbane!

Combining schizophonic computer rendered soundscapes with graphical abstractions Mise En Scene is an exploration of film sound - in particular the importance of incidental sound in the creation of effective and diverse virtual environments. Using abstract methods of translating appropriated video and sound Mise En Scene demonstrates the very human ability to make sense out of nonsense when within a set of guidelines and expectations. Mise En Scene ultimately focuses on the creation of scenes from a variety of visual and sonic signifiers, the end result being akin to a strange dream open to interpretation.

I went along to the Sound Walk workshop and walk at Other Film Festival in Brisbane earlier this year. here's a slideshow video of some photos taken along the walk. it brought back such memories! the walk was from South Bank to the city along the river. we went through the Botannical Gardens near QUT Gardens Point which is where I went to Uni. everything was so familiar though I hadn't been there in a few years.
the music is "Don't you worry" by The Beloved
