earlier this year on 23rd May I went to Gallipoli & ANZAC Cove in Turkey, so this is a collage of some of the video clips taken that day. in Australia & other Commonwealth countries, Rememberance Day is on 11th November. as I'll probably be overseas for that day, I made this video in advance.
it was interesting to see Gallipoli and to hear and read the stories of the ANZAC battles from the Turkish perspectives, as I'd only heard the Australian stories previously. as the Turks won this battle, they celebrate the day as we remember ANZAC Day on 25th April each year. their battles were led by Mustafa Kemal who later went on to become Ataturk - "Father of the Turks" - founder of the Turkish Republic and its first President - the fall of the Ottoman Empire happened after this battle, and many of the famous quotes of his arose from this period also. so when I was there, I thought of the ANZACs who'd lost their lives - partly in the name of modern Turkey. amazing to think what could have happened if the tide hadn't washed their boats onto the wrong part of beach and they had been able to climb the hills over the gradual slope. also I noticed how many red poppies there are in the area! I'm not sure if they were there back in WWI too or if they've been planted in the peninsular by the various commemorative groups.
the song is "Ever so lonely / Eyes / Ocean" by Sheila Chandra on her "Moonsung: A Real World Retrospective" album - I thought this song was apt as perhaps the soldiers felt lonely fighting by the ocean/sea in a far away country. plus it's a beautiful song, and once again it was exactly the right duration (strangely this happens often)
the video is made using Isadora - using multiple players and an image tile - .izz file attached

this is a short video taken out the window on the train last night. the people are reflections of themselves as seen from my side of the train, and they become combined with the lights and suburbs outside the train as we move past the stations.
I made the patch for the effects on the lights & speed of the video in Isadora (attached)
the song is "In Reverse Order" by Neotropic from her "La Prochaine Fois" album - it was exactly the right duration and the name of the song matches the video as the people and lights are in reverse

I just heard this poem mentioned on tv & I remember we learnt it in Primary School - My Country - by Dorothea Mackellar. I can't post it here as it's still under copyright of her estate.

Today at 1900hrs (GMT), we opened the 3rd edition of the Streaming Festival. We are proud to announce that this edition contains a variety of artistic films that come from all over the world.
What?
The festival selected 130 filmmakers, and will show 190 films of which 106 are being premièred on the Streaming Festival! All those works were selected by the festival staff and divided into 14 programs, each program lasting from one to two hours.

What’s different?
In contrast to previous editions, visitors can now view the films separately from the main program. So, it is possible to enjoy the films one by one, or execute a program of your choice and sit back and relax. Visitors can comment on films on the Streaming Festival forum, or send the filmmaker a personal message.
Video Player
We use the Silverlight player program as our main player. Be sure to install Silverlight to view the films in the best possible quality. If you can’t install Silverlight, try the lightwindow or external player option. However, these seem to work slower.
Finally..
Obviously the rules at an Internet festival are different from those at a regular offline festival. The unique experience of the Streaming Festival is as different for each viewer as much as we each differ from our fellow man and woman.

Marcus Westbury posted a comment on facebook today with a link to an audio interview of him by Peter Goer, evening presenter ABC radio Adelaide. one topic was copyright as it is also a topic on his ABC program Not Quite Art this week. there are two sides to every argument. Peter Goer was in favour of protecting the artists rights, and Marcus suggested he's on the side favouring remixing protected works. I can see both sides of the argument.

I just saw the email for the upcoming Maybe Logic Academy courses - there's another by Douglas Rushkoff called Corporatized - An Alternative To Corporatism & Beyond coming up in January 2009 - scheduled for 6 weeks from January 12 to February 22. his last class "Technologies of Persuasion - From Propaganda to Paranoia" was great - the class was very popular and had a lot of people in it. the first few weeks moved really quickly, by the last few weeks it was running at a slower pace so I could try and catch up. I was doing the The Crazy Wisdom of Philip K. Dick class with Erik Davis at the same time, so I was running behind on the Rushkoff class as the PKD class was so interesting! Fingers crossed there might be another PKD class with Erik Davis too - I asked and they said Maybe! (excuse the pun :)
I think Rushkoff's new class will be really interesting, especially as in the Persuasion class he mentioned his thoughts on the global economy and how we should be using a different 'money' system & alternative currencies. He's written many books, and columns with newspapers such as New York Times & Guardian of London. He now also writes for Arthur Magazine, which I think in some ways has taken over from where Mondo 2000 and previously Reality Hackers magazines started. Arthur No. 29, May 2008 has one of his articles, Riding out the Credit Crisis which I think was very timely considering the state of economic affairs around the globe now with some regions stating they are in a recession. this month's Arthur # 31 - October 2008 has another article by Rushkoff called "No Money Down" (pages 26-27) which is worth a read too - the pdf's are available to download on their site (part A has this article). he also has a forum on his site where some of the discussions can take place & continue from previous (and I'm assuming future) MLA courses, boing boing posts, Arthur articles and his books.

today 18/10/2008 was the Sydney Drupal Camp - held at University of NSW campus in Camperdown & hosted by the Drupal Australia Group. Ryan Cross did a fantastic job organising the "unconference" with assistance from many people in the group. I'm too tired right now to write up my notes about it - suffice to say it was a great event and I learnt a few new tips to try out. I'll try write more tomorrow & post the photos (I only took a few) after some sleep. I'd helped out by recording audio of the sessions which will be uploaded to the group site & available for those who couldn't make it.
attached are the raw notes I took during the day - pasted below for searching purposes. I spent all day in the "B" area - which was beginners, but they went through some of the new drupal 6 modules I haven't used much yet. area "A" was more for the hardcore programmers.
