Howard says : English tests for entrants to Australia

this is an article about Australia's plans to impose English tests on immigrants in Delhi Times - Times International paper, published Saturday 16th september 2006, pg 32.

not many articles make the Delhi papers apart from sports (mostly cricket) and some educational/university related items, so it was interesting & disappointing that this is one of the articles that Australia is linked to. what an impression other countries must think of us!

I'd like to know if this made the news in Australia this week also and what people thought of it. plus I want to know what are the 'Australian values' on the test???

knitted recycled converse shoes

I just came across this article whilst reading some rss feeds. BlueAndRedCows on the craftster.org message board has posted a pattern for knitting converse shoes. apparently her old ones broke, so she replaced the fabric/canvas upper shoe with a knitted piece. they look great!! and seem to be really popular on the site also. Boing Boing's just posted an article about them also so I guess they'll be really popular soon!

it's great to see hand made / craft items being made, especially when recycling your favourite pair of shoes. I had a pair of converse boots when I was younger and I used to love those shoes. I bought another of the shoe type connies a couple of years ago but they were ruined once when they got too wet so I had to throw them out (couldn't get rid of the smell :( )

here's some photos of the final product. below is the pattern in case it's removed from the forum.

latest happenings in the videoblogging world

I haven't had much time to read all the emails lately, especially those on the videoblogging yahoogroups as there's so many to wade through.

but here's a couple of things of interest

Richard BF has written a definition of videoblogging post
There are some videoblogs which fall outside of my definition, which probably are videoblogs, and some which fall inside my definition which probably aren't. Where we cannot objectively draw the line, I'm suggesting that we subjectively draw instead upon the spirit of videoblogging:

*** Individuals creating personal media of a new genre and form, not being controlled by big media, and not simply reproducing that which is traditional in big media, such as television and movies.

So, for the sake of a definition, this is roughly what I think a videoblog is:

*** Short, personal, not for profit, mostly non-fictional, video on the web. Snapshots of life.

The last part is important. Last year I tried to popularise the term instant videoblogging. The idea being that videoblogs are created on a whim, not preplanned, just snapshots of life. I still believe this to be an important aspect of videoblogging.
I like the succint definition - snapshots of life. I think this covers many styles of videoblogs, whether they be personal, art or more commercial as these are all facets of life.

---

The other item I'd like to mention is the rise of collaborative efforts, or at least my participation in some collaborative projects.

We Are the Media had some challenges :

WATM Challenge 1: Half Second Clips

WATM Challenge 2: Parts of Things

WATM Challenge #3 - Hands

and a cool project from Susan was a collaborative video she made from video clips from 35 videobloggers who each chose one or more lines of the lyrics. people from all around the videoblogging world helped make the clips and Susan did a great job of combining them altogether.

The song is The Basement Song by Adam Ezra

Y Ruby Y - people watching at the Saket PVR, New Delhi, India

this evening we went to dinner at Azzurro at the Saket PVR. we spent most of the night gazing out the window at the people walking by. it's amazing how the people here can look right past other people as if they don't exist. I probably shouldn't have taken photos/video, but I wanted to remember it and this helps me to remember.

why indeed..

this is a video of the Wickid Force breakdance crew at Battle of The Year 2003 in Sydney, Australia. 09/08/2003

the audio is a bit distorted so you might want to turn it down, but it gives you an idea of the energy of their performance - both style and technical moves!
