Common Ground - street art festival in Wellington (NZ) with Via Grafik & Cut Collective

Via Grafik (Germany) meets Cut Collective (Aotearoa): 13 Feb - 17 May 2009

Street Art: some see it as a way of reclaiming public space, to others it's reckless vandalism. Either way street art offers a communication platform in an urban environment otherwise dominated by symbols of the media and advertising. Emerging from the graffiti movement in Europe and the USA in the 80s, street art has gained profile since UK artist Banksy sold recent work for 1 million pound. Common Ground looks at the phenomenon of street art in two very different countries on opposite sides of the globe - Germany's art collective and design studio Via Grafik and NZ's street art crew Cut Collective. The artists walk the line between art and vandalism, creation and disruption; and share a common belief that "if the wall is kept grey, the mind will follow."

Common Ground is supported by a full series of public programs including New Zealand first LASERTAG events.

13.02.2009 LASERTAG at The New Dowse, 45 Laings Rd Lower Hutt, 8 - 11pm
15.02.2009 Public Debate hosted by Jo Randerson, The New Dowse, 3 - 4pm
21.02.2009 Via Grafik & Cut Collective live at the Cuba Street Carnival, Wellington.

Bus painting for the parade and Cut Collective will be holding a stall in the market selling art, prints and T-Shirts

urban knitting - graffiti knitting

deputy-dog blog has posted an article about urban / graffiti knitting & the knitta please crew who do graffiti knitting around their towns. check out the tree cosies below

Knitta began in August 2005, when the soon-to-be-Knittas were discussing their frustration over unfinished knitting projects: half-knitted sweaters and balls of yarn gathering dust. That afternoon, they knit their first door handle. Then it dawned on them ... a tag crew of knitters, bombing the inner city with vibrant, stitched works of art, wrapped around everything from beer bottles on easy nights to public monuments and utility poles on more ambitious outings. With a mix of clandestine moves and gangsta rap - Knitta was born! Today, Knitta is a group of ladies of all ages, nationalities, and ... gender.

there's a video of them on youtube :

Graffiti Technica - 3D Graffiti electronic art tagging

Graffiti Technica is dedicated to the progression of hardcore electronic art and 3d graffiti. The graffiti designs and lettering on the site are completely digital - to explore new ways of creating pieces.

The site owner & Brisbane based designer Brad Schwede explains some of his influences :

Graffiti has always influenced me since the first time I saw works from trains on the way to the school... All the back industrial lots were covered in styles from generic tagging to intricately designed works. Back and forwards to school gave me loads of time to understand the styles and colors that were being used. It was so far advanced from anything that was in the modern culture that it was no wonder that people didn't understand it.

ARTWALK K Road

originally posted on Stealth board - New Zealand thread @ http://www.stealthmag.com/board/viewthread.php?tid=3418

ok, these links aren't all strictly hip hop, but some of the galleries do show some graf, and if you're visiting NZ/Auckland, it's worth checking them out.

in the galleries, there's usually an "Artwalk K Road" brochure created by the K Road Business Association - this is where all these links & descriptions come from. (typos & errors below are mine)

K Road = Karangahape Road, I'll use the abbreviation to save more typos

Auckland Hip Hop Summit - videos

Auckland Hip Hop Summit 2005 The 2005 Auckland Hip Hop Summit was held 7-8th October at Auckland's Town Hall and Aotea Square. I caught a bit of the grafitti wall being painted on Saturday afternoon, and some of the "Disrupt the Floor" breakdancing heats. The finals and MC gigs were held Saturday night but unfortunately I couldn't attend. Congratulations to the Blackout crew for winning the competition - I heard it was a great battle between Step Kingz and Blackout. Check out some of the videos of the heats via the links below - be warned, some of the files are quite large!

Save the links and open in Real Player (Windows) to stream the videos instead of downloading. I'm trying out different file formats - some are are divX AVI and the others are DivX6. Any comments welcome on which format work best on your system..
