ART NOTE: QUIVER - LINDA LOH

Linda Loh's QUIVER exhibition emerges from her studio residency at invisible art space in May 2026 and is an iteration of previous works exploring the orb form. Loh notes: "The orbs are restless, quivering representations of luminous circular forms, existing and not existing, hovering in their own version of space. Extending the recurring themes of light, circles and blurred boundaries, the opportunity to access multiple screens enabled the integration of various versions, culminating in an abstraction of ideas informing the work: multiplicity, “all at once,” entanglement, parallel play, infinity, forever, symbols, ascension, “self” and more." It is Loh's first solo exhibition in Sydney and the first time all of her video and digital-based orbs have been shown at once.

Orbs can be seen in both analog and digital photography as transparent, circular phenomena appearing unexpectedly within the photograph. There is debate over what causes them — is it dirt or reflections of light on the camera's lens or flash, or something more paranormal [1][12].

Orbs have a philosophical history also — Plato's Symposium features orbs: Aristophanes’ speech mentions that original human beings were spherical in form, with four arms, four legs and two faces looking in opposite directions [3]. Zeus was jealous of their strength and cut them into two, and they've been trying to return to their original form as One since then, only succeeding through love [3][2]. The circular form of the orb has indicated Oneness in many cultures throughout history [4].

Loh’s orbs glow and pulsate light emitted from the darkness of the black screens. One screen is mounted at eye height on the wall, bathed in the light from a projector. Ten screens of various dimensions, from 12" to 52", are placed on the gallery floor, reminiscent of Richard Serra's Casting (1969) work, lifting the installation beyond a purely pictorial object [5]. Loh's screens are placed in both vertical and horizontal orientation on the floor adjacent to the wall and horizontally on the wall, which extends Serra's horizontal floor layout. Circular reflections fill the floor gaps between the display devices. The orbs are beautiful to look at, the colours are harmonious and they fit within what Peter Schjeldahl calls Baudelaire's definition of beauty as a "spark between something fleeting and something timeless" [6] in both concept and visual aspects. Loh's light-filled orbs quiver, as the exhibition title suggests. Circular patterns of colour, oscillating fields of light-based electromagnetic frequencies create space within the installation. This work is one of pure light, with the screens emitting light from the electronics within. It's a sharp contrast to traditional paintings where layers of paint cover the canvas, representing light within the frame.

Scientific research on light shows that like wind, light can push objects in its path [7], it creates movement. Loh's orbs are activated, the wisps of colour move slowly around the form, and pulsate like the activation of energy in the electrons themselves. We're seeing frequencies of light moving at its most basic level. Light has been studied throughout time, from Euclid of Alexandria in his c. 300 BC Optica record of observations [8], to Isaac Newton's 1704 book Opticks and Michael Faraday and James Clerk Maxwell's work on the electromagnetic spectrum in the 1800s through to Werner Heisenberg's self-titled Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle effectively noting that "existence at the quantum level seems to be metaphysical rather than material" [9]. Karen Barad notes that matter and meaning are entangled at the atomic level and cannot be separated [10]. We're seeing light as consciousness, at the quantum scale [11] imagined by Loh's orbs. These lights are both borderless in their reflections and contained within their screens.

future memories and 360 degree videos

my videoblogging friend Rupert Howe recorded some 360 degree video http://twittervlog.tv/2016/02/14/360-vlog-singing-under-a-railway-arch I haven't seen/used 360 cam before. it was weird to watch too-to be able to change the view and the video kept going. hard to tell what was me choosing or orig view. but it's actually both. original view is just the starting reference point I guess? am wondering how this changes 'image as a point in time' idea. when you *can* see whole scene. different way of process memories?

yes, will think more on this: how does the 360 degree camera footage change future memories - when you *can* see the whole scene

Engage Media : Videomakers For Change

Engage Media has done incredible work in documenting some of the stories of people & communities in Asia. Some of my favs are the Punks who use their music to do activism and help their communities, and the amazing work Andrew Garton has done with Sarawak, documenting how their traditional lives in forest communities has been changed & is at risk of being lost.

They are crowdfunding via pozible to help more video journalists attend Camp Sambel this year, for training.

It's just over half way funded, pls help it get through, & spread the word to your friends. I think the world needs to hear more of these Voices - they're doing important work

Open Air by Chris Caines

Open Air by Chris Caines - Artists Talk - December 3rd, 2011

I went to the Open Air Artists Talk today to hear video artist Chris Caines speak about his current exhibition at the Mosman Art Gallery, which is part of the Festival of Mosman. The work is comprised of a video installation, in The Cube at the gallery, and also a locative iphone application, "Open Air - Locative Audio Essay" which you can view and listen to whilst walking along the path at Sirius Cove, to see the views from the Artists Cove. (I've also used the app at home, so if you're not in Sydney, then you can try it remotely too, but obviously the locative parts won't be the same.)

Once you enter The Cube, the videos and audio starts playing. The videos are displayed in a gallery case, so the viewer can get an intimate view of the moving images by looking down into the case. The Light is amazing, and the colours so rich and vibrant, even with the subtle, delicate blends as Caines adjusts the video by looking forwards and backwards in Time - into the Past and into the Future - to create his video paintings. I think he has captured the light of the works of the Masters in this piece. There are twelve images displayed, which shift throughout time, traveling from the country to the city, as the viewer sees glimpses of both man-made and natural scenes being combined into a modern art work.

There's a soundtrack playing whilst you watch the videos - made from a collection of field recordings from the sites where the images and videos were originally recorded. The effect of listening to the soundscape and gazing on the video panels finding fragments of reality and images in them is quite mesmerizing and reminds me of watching shapes form whilst watching the clouds go by. I felt so relaxed after watching the videos - it's almost like waking up after a dream where you've been watching colours and shapes drift around - there's definitely a dream-like feeling to the work. Footage was recorded over a five year period, and covers the Beauty of the Australian landscape and city-scape. The overall work is stunning - the light and clarity of the video is something to behold. I took a few video clips and photos, below, which don't obviously do the work justice, but are for documentation purposes - you really need to see the work in situ to appreciate its true beauty. Thank you to the Gallery and Festival for including video art in this year's programme.

shadow out of time

.mov movie file ::: .flv video file ::: video page on blip.tv

Ian's video was called time travel. this initially brought to mind the Orbital song with the Star Trek TNG "Time Squared" episode sample for the Mobius & time becoming a loop. the past few weeks have felt like this for me - I've gone back to 2000, 2001, and hopefully 2003 this week if all goes well.

then I also thought about "Moving Time" as I might be moving house soon

but the theme I went with for the final video (though I sneaked the Mobius quote in the title text..) was the H.P. Lovecraft book "Shadow out of time". we read this for an online class I'm taking, and I really enjoyed it

I thought about Plato's ideas of "remembering knowledge" across the aeons (time travel of the mind?)

one of the other class members mentioned the mental projections and mind swaps & the data-body and likened the spaces between dream/reality in the book, to the virtual spaces common these days & how we often have a data-body these days as well as a flesh-body

so I then thought about outsourcing memory using photos, videos, blogs etc and how by uploading these we become a virtual self on the internet. and how sometimes these things can become cluttered and cross-over each other and even annoying after a while (as I think watching this loop for 1:30 is.. but this is on purpose :), and they're not an exact copy of ourselves. and how sometimes these things can overshadow our real selves, or at least other's impressions of our selves. and how, when watching something on loop you sometimes focus on the foreground moving text, and other times 'me' - this seems to match my real world experiences too - shifting between online me & real-world me focuses

I represented the data-body using text words as this is the medium of the book. using Isadora I made a controller that would move the words around the screen - often blotting out the video of me playing in the background. but it's not really me - it's another virtual image -> mirror image of me, rather than the me I imagine in my mind, distorted by the join in the two glass mirrors and my face is covered most of the time by the camera - the recording of the data-body.

the video is playing on loop with my washing machine as the soundtrack.

using footage of 'me' in the video was inspired by Cheryl's videos, as this is unusal for my videos, so I looked forwards & backwards for inspiration - as in the book, Peaslee & the Yithians look forward & backwards in time for knowledge

dune day vs clear day - panels test

I took a video from the train on the Wednesday Sydney awoke to the red dust storm and then another on the next day. the videos were taken with my nokia n95 camera, so it lost most of the redness, but you can see that the sky was dustier than the clear Thursday. they're not completely in sync, because I wanted dune day to be slightly ahead of clear day, so you can watch it from left to right and see the scene & colours change as your eye reaches the second panel. I'm not sure if this effect worked as well as I planned though - perhaps I should have lined them up so they were in sync after all.

made with Isadora - the 20090929_dune-day_clear-day.izz patch is attached

I always have problems saving the Isadora video files as they always lose video quality and end up with lots of compression artifacts. I tried exporting at 5% rate, but it somehow increased the framerate and sped up the video! so this was saved at 95%.

other videos taken on the day - with my sony camera so the colours show up properly :

trainscapes ceiling

I thought it'd be cool to get a personal projector and project videos onto the ceiling of the train for people to watch during the ride to & from work. have a website where people could suggest videos, or perhaps they tweet them or sms. they could rate them too on the site. I was thinking art or landscapes - trainscapes. but I suppose eventually it'd be overtaken by advertisers or spammers. would be nice for a while though! just look at all this ceiling space doing nothing - apart from the bright lighting in the train, this would be ok for an adhoc screen. 29/04/2009
