Node Talk: Socially Engaged Art in Times of Social Distance

"In times of social distancing, how might we make socially engaged art?" — this is the question posed in the recorded talk, "Node Talk: Socially Engaged Art in Times of Social Distance" with Stine Marie Jacobsen on nodecenter

exploring ideas and what-if questions

on haptic human website, I'll be exploring the human touch in handmade objects, using the idea (feeling? what-if question?) that there's a transfer of atoms when objects are made, and when they are hand-made I think the *human* atoms get blended (even in a slight way) with the object's atoms, and it makes us relate to them more - we 'feel' the humanity, or the soul perhaps (our common atoms/frequencies). this will allow me to research across different topics and disciplines, and to apply "what-if" questions to try answer and explore.

this idea is based on my reply to a discussion on haptics on my textiles class forum, and some earlier thoughts about analog audio vs digital audio recordings (see below & attached)

note that there'll mostly be rough notes/stream of consciousness ideas here for a bit of fun, so nothing really to see here - move along

trainscapes ceiling

I thought it'd be cool to get a personal projector and project videos onto the ceiling of the train for people to watch during the ride to & from work. have a website where people could suggest videos, or perhaps they tweet them or sms. they could rate them too on the site. I was thinking art or landscapes - trainscapes. but I suppose eventually it'd be overtaken by advertisers or spammers. would be nice for a while though! just look at all this ceiling space doing nothing - apart from the bright lighting in the train, this would be ok for an adhoc screen. 29/04/2009

Magic Squares - video project?

could a maths story work?

at scanz there was a paper called "Complexity and Cybernetics Redux" by Nina Czegledy and it mentioned Magic Squares. these cover topics such as mysticism, philosophy, mathematics. could the game/puzzle be to solve the magic square. the game leaders send out clues which reflect the numbers& people go out and find the item that has been uploaded to represent each square. eg, so people could film clues like numbers from different places, a quantity of subjects (eg if the number was 10, then film collections of 10 things in a single clip), or even make a video about a saying/piece of writing that might represent the numbers. whatever people can think of

gps walking & video / sound / photo recording project (ideas)

I'm heading to New Plymouth this evening for SCANZ 2009 - Symposium being held over the weekend. so I've been reading about some of the participating artists and their projects. the intro for Brett Stalbaum gave me a few ideas for a * very simple * gps video project. below is the paragraph that triggered my thoughts - especially the phrase "letting voluminous GIS data and some algorithms we wrote tell us where to go"

steps
- in your local area, or a place where you can go to easily more than once (eg probably best to do in your own country not whilst overseas unless it's somewhere you can visit again)
- walk around the space once and collect the gps data
- then use (write first) a program - perhaps web based so you could use your mobile phone??? - that randomizes the data co-ordinates and selects a position for you to go to

Adrian Miles's Vogme Manifesto and subsequent thoughts on group philosophies (thoughts via Rupert's email)

I'm on a mail list about net cinema and art videoblogging called "Artists in the Cloud". Rupert posted a message yesterday about Adrian Miles's Vogme Manifesto and subsequent thoughts on group philosophies. I'm posting Rupert's email below in full so I don't have to keep referring back to my email account or the web email account (as they move quickly sometimes & it's easy to lose track). I've added links to Adrian Mile's vog manifesto for reference too.

I don't really know much about film history or theory and I've forgotten most of my art theory, though I keep across net art and new media, I guess I haven't sorted out formerly in my own head what it is that I do when I try to make 'art'-like videos. I'm not sure I need a manifesto, but perhaps it would be a good exercise to think about it. I've looked back at videos that I've made over past years and they do seem to be similar so perhaps there is an unconscious 'manifesto' in play already.

so, last night & today I've been finding some from artists I either admire or have recently been finding out about. and of course, in using the internet, this has led me on some tangents so I've discovered some new artists too. collating snippets here for further thought.

I've just bought this book so I can read it when I get back to Aus for holidays. the World Changing site has heaps of useful articles so I'm hoping the book will too!

the blurb from the site:

"From consumer consciousness to a new vision for industry; non-toxic homes to refugee shelters; microfinance to effective philanthropy; socially responsible investing to starting a green business; citizen media to human rights; ecological economics to climate change, this is the most comprehensive, cutting-edge overview to date of what's possible in the near future -- if we decide to make it so."

TED Blog - ideas from scientists, engineers & business thinkers

I've been looking at the TED Blog today and watching some of the videos from the conference - it's the blog for the TED conference. The TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference is an annual event where leading thinkers and doers gather for inspiration.

which reminds me I should catch up with the Kurzweil-AI site after watching the Ray Kurzweil presentation on the exponential growth of technology and it's adoption.

videoblog mind map

There's been lots of discussion on the vlogtheory yahoogroups list about videoblogging - debates over content, medium etc. I've done up a quick mind map (using sourceforge freemind) to try to collect my thoughts. it may not be completely in line with the ideas of the group, but could be useful as a starting point to capture thoughts, for me at least. I haven't included everything yet, but it's a start.
